History

Construction of our premiere $3million dollar building made of steel, concrete and glass began in October of 1966. Funds for the construction were provided by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, HUD, under the guidelines of HUD’s 202 Loan Mortgage Program. The federal loan and mortgage guidelines allowed us to keep our rents affordable while maintaining a feeling of independence and secure living.  YaPoAh Terrace is a HUD Housing Project (Section 8/202) for Seniors 62 years and older. Please see our Rental Rates page for an explanation of qualifications and rental rates.

Origin of the name, YaPoAh Terrace:

“Ya Po Ah” means very high place in the language of the Kalapuya Indians who inhabited the Willamette Valley prior to the arrival of the Euro-American settlers. Ya Po Ah was the name used by the tribe for what is now called , Skinner Butte, in honor of Eugene Franklin Skinner, the founder of Eugene City. He erected his first log cabin on the western slopes of the butte to avoid the frequent floods of the Willamette River to the north, per the advice of the Kalapuya.
